Trust Under Pressure: When Cracks Appear
From The Edges Edition 10
We go to the edges to find the stories that matter

What happens when trust is pushed to the edges? A CEO’s relationship with an employee reveals how quickly trust in leaders can collapse. Promises of free childcare leave those most in need excluded, leading to a lack of trust in government decisions. Refugee charities are forced to install safe rooms and remove Trustee information. Students who built futures here face being told to leave. In our workplaces, AI tools listen in without us fully knowing where the data goes. Do we trust decision makers with this data?
There are sparks of possibility in other areas. In women’s sport, we see what happens when things are designed with difference in mind. People feel they can belong.
The leadership lessons about trust show us that we need to create cultures where people feel safe. Trust is never automatic. It is tested through decisions under pressure. How do you respond? What work do you need to do to create cultures of trust?
We scan the news every week to the edges to find the stories that matter. We curate the stories to bring you insights and learning. If you think someone else will be interested, share this with them.
Stories from the edges this week...

Nestlé CEO Sacked Over Affair With Colleague
Nestlé CEO Laurent Freixe, failed to declare a relationship with a junior colleague, which resulted in him being fired. The affair was reported to an internal company hotline called 'Speak Up,' and an internal investigation followed. The company made the decision in line with its corporate governance processes. He did not receive any financial settlement. As a CEO he was in a position of trust. The company had to act in the face of this misuse of that trust. Other companies have had to take similar actions. With new laws in the new Employment Rights Bill, situations like this will become even more important for employers to act on.

Refugee Charities Remove Trustee Details
Several refugee charities raised concerns over the risks of the debate about refugees. With flags appearing and hotels housing refugees being attacked, people are concerned. The Charity Commission has taken the rare step of removing Trustee details from the register to protect people. Other refugee charities have been forced to install safe rooms in their premises, or relocate to less visible sites, and some have had to close offices. With the surge in far-right nationalism shown through flags being raised, and people surrounding hotels housing refugees, this will alarm many involved in those charities. There will be other charities considering actions.

Low-income families miss out on 30 hours of free childcare
The new 30 hours of free childcare have launched. The problem is that families who do not earn enough will have to pay more. The expansion is great for some families, but there is an imbalance. There is also the issue of the workforce crisis in the sector. Key issues are that 56% of parents can't access the funding without extra costs or conditions, nurseries are limiting the funded hours, and there are high consumables charges. With childcare a key factor in whether parents can work, we hope the issues will be addressed.

HR Using AI Notetakers Exposing Organisations To Legal Risk
So many of us are now using AI notetakers to take notes for us in meetings. There is a legal risk, though. Gemma Dale, Senior Lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University, has said that people need to understand the terms and conditions when they start using these software tools. If it's a US company, then transferring data outside the EU could be a risk. This is a good reminder to check what tools we are all using, especially when it comes to personal data.

International Students Will Be Removed If They Overstay Visas
The Home Office will be contacting about 130,000 students and their families, warning them they will be forced to leave the UK if they have no legal right to remain. The political and media focus this summer has been on people arriving on small boats, a similar number arrive legally with visas, then apply for asylum often when those visas run out. Many of those claims are legitimate, but Ministers are under pressure to address this. With universities relying on overseas students for funding, will this make the UK a less appealing place to study?

Bristol returns cultural artefacts taken from Larrakia people in Australia
Bristol City Council has formally handed over 33 objects back to people in Australia. The items included spears that would have been used to hunt creatures from fish to buffalo. They were 'collected' in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and donated to the museum. They were on display in Bristol and then in storage. There was a ceremony before the items were returned. The council has asked whether other museums will review their items and where they came from.

Founder Changes Game With Immersive Pop-Up Store To Celebrate Women's Sport
Style Of Our Own (SOOO) is a retail store set up in London to celebrate women's sport. Founder Laura Youngson created Ida Sports, a sports company that creates football boots specially engineered for women’s bodies. With the help of Westminster City Council, the new store in Oxford has been set up. It is a hub for women’s sport merchandise, kit and equipment. There's a three-a-side football pitch, dedicated spaces for events and workshops, and screens to watch sports. Her football boots design addresses the fact that women have differently shaped feet. The store is to celebrate the many differences in women's sport. Youngson has seen the impact of this store on inclusion, “People walk in and they breathe out with this sense of relief,” she says. “It’s like they’ve found their home.”

Trust will always come under pressure. Policies, leaders and how we work all function around trust. What matters is not avoiding the pressure, but how leaders show up when it arrives and how we all create cultures of trust.
So here is the question for you this week... where in your organisation is trust being stretched thin, and what will you do to strengthen it before it breaks?
